Bateman Brings Home The Win at the 2009 Spoakne Count Raceway Drag Opener!
Garrett Bateman (Tacoma, Wash.) dominated elimination day at Spokane County Raceway piloting the Plueger & Gyger 1973 Ford Mustang Nitro Funny Car. Bateman began the day with a big win over Mark Sanders and his ’70 Nova in the first round. Bateman then matched up against Todd Lensko and the Jolly Rogers ’73 Camaro and put up a big number during the heat of the day with a 5.908 sec. at over 230 mph. Bateman moved into the final round to face-off with teammate and Spokane County Raceway track operator, Bucky Austin. Austin left the starting line with a slight advantage but Bateman had already caught him by 400ft and went on to take the win and reset his own track record with a 5.889 sec. at over 230 mph.

In Pro Mod Rick Distefano (Calgary, Alb.) and his ’53 Corvette came in to Sunday qualified 7th. In the first round he showed everybody that he was now the car to beat with his track record run of 6.166. In the second round he reset the track record to 6.158. The final round saw Vern Mills (Missoula, Mont.) trying to take a win from Distefano, Mills was able to get off the line first but just didn’t have the power to hold off Distefano roared by him to take the win at one of the quickest West Coast Pro Mod Association events ever.
